In an effort to empower our children and teach self-reliance we have introduced Peace Talk. Peace Talk is a process for two children to work through a conflict. It requires that the children request time, secure the Peace Link from the classroom and go through the Peace Talk script. The process takes about 5-6 minutes. First, second, and third graders have learned how to say “I” messages, perform active listening, and create fair solutions to the conflict. Situations that are harmful or threatening are handled by the teacher. If a teacher has had to get involved, Peace Talk can be suggested afterwards. Peace Talk takes place in the classroom or outside the door in the hallway. It can be done with another student from another classroom, also. This is an effective way for children to learn how to take care of themselves, assert themselves, and create peace.
