Middle School Spanish

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español de la Sra. Hernández!

Welcome to Mrs. Hernandez Spanish class!

¡Hola! Soy la Sra. Hernández. I am the Spanish teacher for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels.

I enjoy teaching not only the Spanish language, but also the culture of the Hispanic countries. I am a proud Mexican, married to a proud Colombian and befriended to many proud Latins from all over the world, who loves sharing the highlights of these beautiful countries.

I am graduated from Tecnológico de Monterrey in México with a Master's Degree from the University of Texas. Through Oakland University I got my Spanish Endorsement to add to my Michigan's Teaching Certificate.

In my class you will continue to learn Spanish as a second language. You will build on the knowledge that you bring from previous years of Spanish lessons. If you are new to the school and new to Spanish, don't worry, we'll work together to get you, little by little, to the same level than the rest of the class. On the other hand, if you are already a Spanish speaker, we'll find material that is challenging for you so you continue to develop your Spanish skills. You will also learn cultural aspects of Hispanic countries by preparing typical food, learning songs, participating in the Hispanic week, etc. The more you are open to learning the language and its culture, the more fun you will have... enjoy learning ESPAÑOL!

Please feel free to contact me by phone at (248) 299-3798 ext. 349 or by e-mail at hernandez.monica@holyfam.org if you have any questions. You can also visit during my planning periods by making an appointment.

See you on Monday!

Hola queridos estudiantes,

I pray you and your families are all staying safe and filled with peace.

On Monday I will hold a Zoom meeting (see information on previous post). I would like to hear your questions and concerns about the Spanish assignments then.

Due dates are just a guideline for you to keep up with your practices, but don't worry, if you are struggling with the practices we can discuss more on Monday during our meeting. You don't have to turn them in on Monday if you feel is too much.

Remember this 'distance learning' is new to all so we are learning together. I am open to hearing your feedback on Monday.

Hope to see you all!

Have a great weekend!
Sra. Hernandez

Práctica de español para esta semana 7o grado -7th grade Spanish practice for this week

¡Hola queridos estudiantes! ¿Cómo están? ¡Los extraño a todos!

Hello dear students! How are you? I miss you all!

I'm grateful that we have such great technology nowadays and that we can stay in touch and continue to learn even when we are not at school. Plus, there are so many free resources online to practice your Spanish, I really hope you are taking advantage! (Duolingo/Fabulingua/Studycat, etc.)

This week I want you to practice what we have learned in class about school subjects, school supplies, schedules, telling time and regular -AR verbs related to school, in Unit 2 - Lesson 2. The practice will be in the three out of the four domains of language that we have talked about in class: reading, writing and listening (the other one is speaking). We will be using the IXL webpage/application for this purpose (there is a one month free trial, please go to www.ixl.com). You should have received through your school's e-mail your ID and password to access it. Try your Spam or Trash folder if you don't see it in your Inbox. Once you go in, you should see the following skills assigned to you under Unit 3 - En clase. They are highlighted in yellow. Practice them in order E, F, G, H, I, J and finally K.

(3.I)Schedules with ordinal numbers and times
(3.K)Common ‑ar verbs
(3.J)Common adjectives
(3.H)Provide ‑ar verbs related to school
(3.G)Recognize ‑ar verbs related to school
(3.F)Name school supplies
(3.E)Recognize school supplies

These practices are for the first class of the week. I will post a different assignment/practice for the second class of the week on Wednesday morning. The idea is that you practice until you reach a score of at least an 80 to make sure that you have mastered the skill. It should take you about 40 to 50 minutes to complete all of them. You don't have to notify me when you complete this assignment as I can see on my end that you logged in and practiced. I won't use scores as a grade. What's important is that you learn through practice. Remember... practice is key to learning a language!

If you have questions please comment here as everyone can benefit from the answer. If your question is related to your access, then e-mail me to hernandez.monica@holyfam.org or send me a private comment here in Google Classroom.

¡Estoy muy emocionada de comenzar una nueva y muy diferente semana de clases con ustedes... saludos!

Práctica de español para 5o grado - 5th grade Spanish practice for this week

¡Hola queridos estudiantes! ¿Cómo están? ¡Los extraño a todos!

Hello dear students! How are you? I miss you all!

I'm grateful that we have such great technology nowadays and that we can stay in touch and continue to learn even when we are not at school. Plus, there are so many free resources online to practice your Spanish, I really hope you are taking advantage! (Duolingo/Rockalingua/Calico/Fabulingua/Studycat, etc.)

This week I want you to practice what we have learned in class about the alphabet and the numbers in Spanish. We only learned from 0-20, but I will make it a little more challenging and ask you to practice up to number 31. The practice will be in three out of the four domains of language that we have talked about in class: reading, writing and listening (the other one is speaking). We will be using the IXL webpage/application for this purpose (there is a one month free trial, please go to www.ixl.com). You should have received through your school's e-mail your ID and password to access it. Once you go in, you should see the following skills assigned to you. Practice them in order A, B, C, D and finally P.

(1.P)Listen and fill in a form with personal information: letters and numbers
(1.D)Numbers 21‑31
(1.C)Numbers 11‑20
(1.B)Numbers 0‑10
(1.A)The Spanish alphabet

My recommendation to you would be to do all of the practices in one day, two times this week. It should take you between 30 to 40 minutes to complete them all. If you can do it only once this week, it's fine, but try to do it twice. Remember practice is key to learning a language! You don't have to notify me when you complete this assignment as I can see on my end that you logged in and practiced. Don't worry about scores. What's important is that you learn through practice.

If you have questions please comment here as everyone can benefit from the answer. If your question is related to your access, then e-mail me to hernandez.monica@holyfam.org or send me a private comment here in Google Classroom.

Spanish practice during Summer

Hello dear students and parents,

The school year is almost over, summer is here!

However, I highly recommend you to continue practicing your Spanish during these months so when you come back you remember what we learned, and maybe even bring some new vocabulary to use in class! Remember that we will continue where we left and move forward to incorporate the old vocab and grammar to the new topics and skills.

The following article contains 12 apps that you can use in any Smart device or on the computer, many of them for free! Try a few and see which one you find more interesting and useful. You may even choose 2 or 3 for developing the different domains of language that we've talked about in class (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Also, I encourage you to continue logging into your Avancemos Spanish e-book and practice with the flashcards, games and practices.

Lastly, as we have discussed in class, listening to music in Spanish as you follow the lyrics, and watching TV in Spanish with subtitles help you develop your listening and speaking (pronunciation) skills.

I wish you all a nice and safe summer. ¡Hasta pronto!

Sra. Hernandez
